RESIDENTS of Lima Sands on the Essequibo Coast will soon be able to easily access potable water, now that work has begun on the construction of a well in the area.
The contract for the project has been awarded to S. Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Constructing Services.
Project supervisor, Mark Persaud told the Guyana Chronicle on Monday that work on the 600-ft well, which started last Wednesday, is moving apace, with the intention of completing it within the next two months.
“So far, we didn’t have any problems, but we are working as fast as possible to finish this well; we’re trying to make this as strong and as secure as possible,” Persaud said.
Lima Sands residents had previously told the Guyana Chronicle that they usually had to walk for miles to get to a canal to access water to last them the day.
And these were, many of them, elderly people or young single-parent mothers. They said, too, that besides being very taxing, fetching water from so far off was very costly, as many times they’ve had to pay someone who was more able-bodied to help them do it.
