Berbice schoolboy drowns after outing with friends

A BERBICE schoolboy who was nicknamed “Fishy” drowned after a swim outing went horribly wrong for a group of friends.The body of 15-year-old Ronaldo Sankar was pulled from the Tain Koker trench at sunset Wednesday.

Sankar, a fifth form student of J.C. ChandiSingh Secondary School and of WilliamsBurg, Corentyne Berbice left with five friends after school to go for a swim.

According to Amanda Dihal, a relative, Sankar did not return home after school at the time he usually would, but at around 16:00h his friends came by his home and informed his parents that he could not be found.

“They told us they were swimming and when they got up did not see Ronaldo; he went down in the water and did not come up back, one of the boys who was there said,” Dihal stated.

As family members gathered at the scene, a search was launched and the teen’s lifeless body was discovered two hours after the incident.

“We got some diver and they went in and search for him”.

Relatives told this publication this is the first time the teen ventured to the area to swim.

His mother Natasha Sankar, who was at the Port Mourant Hospital was in a state of shock and had to be consoled by family members as she stared at the lifeless body of her son as it lay in a stretcher at the entrance of the hospital.

Ronaldo was her eldest of three sons.
