West Berbice man to stand trial for rape -another gets three years for cannabis

SIXTY-SEVEN-year-old Ramdehal Ramcharan, also known as “Baltan”, of Blairmont # 2 Settlement, West Bank Berbice, was on Tuesday committed by Blairmont Magistrate Rhondell Weever to stand trial for the rape of a child under the age of 16; an act he is alleged to have committed on a 12-year-old Blairmont girl at sometime between March 20th and April 16th last.Led by Police Prosecutor Corporal Raquel Mars, six witnesses — including the child, her mother and other relatives — testified for the prosecution. At the end of their testimonies, Magistrate Weever ruled that a prima facie case had been made against Ramcharan, and committed him to stand trial at the next sitting of the Berbice High Court.

He was granted bail in the sum of $250,000 pending trial.

CANNABIS CONVICTION
And Magistrate Weever has sentenced 48-year-old Seon Isaacs of Hopetown Village, West Coast Berbice to three years’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to being in possession of eight grams of marijuana.

Police Prosecutor Raquel Mars told the court that on October 28th last, police, acting on information received, visited and searched Isaacs’ residence, where they found the narcotics hidden in a pot in the home. He was thus arrested and subsequently charged.
