THE University of Guyana (UG), Department of law has been boosted following the donation of 244 law books by the Government of Canada, under the Improved Access to Justice in the Caribbean project (IMPACT Justice).Regional Project Director of IMPACT Justice, Professor Velma Newton explained that the University of Guyana was selected from among other Universities in the West Indies (UWI) in Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad to be recipients of the law books.
She added that the University of Guyana has a better organised library, as well as trained staff, who she believes will maintain and take proper care of the books donated. UG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ivelaw Griffith expressed gratitude on behalf of the University to the Government of Canada, IMPACT Justice Projects for its hearty contribution.
He revealed that a sum of approximately GYD$33 million was invested on the 244 law books, stating that the University of Guyana will place much value on this genuine contribution.
Students of the University of Guyana, particularly those in the Law Programme are expected to benefit greatly from these books. Impact Justice is a five-year regional justice sector reform project which is being implemented from within the Caribbean Law Institute Centre at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. The Project has as its ultimate outcome, enhanced access to justice benefiting men, women, youth and businesses in 13 CARICOM Member States.
