AFTER Triumphing in four of the seven sporting disciplines and amassing 91 points, Suriname was last evening declared the overall winners of the Inter Guiana “Goodwill” Games, after Guyana finished behind with 85 points. At last evening’s closing ceremony which was held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH),it was announced that while Guyana made a clean sweep of the table tennis

competition,dominated the athletics competition, and won the male volleyball competition, it was Suriname who walked away with wins in swimming, badminton, basketball and FUTSAL football.
Guyana and Suriname shared the spoils in the volleyball competition in which Suriname won on the distaff side.
The various teams and individuals were presented with their prizes at last evening’s closing ceremony, where Suriname Director of Sport, Luciano Mentowikromo, during his address, congratulated Guyana on another successful hosting of the Games.
Mentowikromo further spoke of the opportunities that the Games present,to foster better relations between the participating countries by bringing the young athletes together.
“The value of the Inter Guiana Games should never be underestimated. These youngsters;they are the leaders of the future, and the earlier we can create a bond between them the better our future will be. By bringing the youngsters together we are putting together the foundation for the future.” Mentowikromo said.
The feature address of the night was delivered by Guyana’s own Director of Sport, Christopher Jones, who congratulated the various sporting associations that participated,commending them for taking the time to prepare the athletes.
He noted that this year’s hosting of the Games was an opportunity to identify shortcomings that may need to be rectified in the hosting of the annual Games, pointing out that Guyana is still at a disadvantage when it comes to competing in sports against countries like Suriname,because sports still remains largely left out of our school curriculum.
