Bandits snatch $2M from airline agent

BANDITS on Wednesday grabbed a bag containing $2M in cash from a couple on Robb Street, Georgetown and police are urging citizens to avoid walking around with large sums of cash.

The couple was relieved of the cash while sitting in a car. They had just withdrawn the cash from a city bank. Crime Chief (ag) Hugh Jessemy urged members of the public to use more plastic (ATM cards) rather than carrying around large sums of money.

He also encouraged citizens to be alert and vigilant and report all incidents of crime to the police. Jessemy told the Guyana Chronicle that it was about 13:10hrs when airline agent, Marcia Rahaman and her husband, Sheik Rahaman of Lot 302 Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara, had made a withdrawal from the Scotiabank branch on Carmichael Street.

He related that the couple then proceeded to Robb Street where Sheik Rahaman went into a store to make a purchase leaving his wife seated in their car, when two men held her at gunpoint and took away the bag she had containing $2M in cash. Sheik Rahaman is said to be a businessman and was in the city to transact business when the armed robbery occurred. The robbers reportedly escaped via a motorcycle. Jessemy said no arrests have been made, but police are trying to get surveillance footage of the incident.
