THE police have recaptured a juvenile, and are in pursuit of two others after they escaped from the Juvenile Holding Centre at Sophia, Greater Georgetown,on Saturday. In a statement, the police said the trio escaped from the holding centre around 05:00 hrs after they allegedly dug a hole in the lower flat and scaled the fence.
According to the police, the recaptured juvenile, who hails from Adventure, Essequibo Coast, was recaptured at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne. He was on remand for a charge of robbery under arms.
The two other juveniles were on remand for simple larceny and break and enter and larceny.
“Efforts are being made to have them recaptured,” the police said.
When the Guyana Chronicle visited the Juvenile Holding Centre at around 11:30hrs on Saturday, the facility had a heavy presence of police officers.
But the officers on duty were all tight-lipped, saying all questions must be directed to the Divisional Commander, Marlon Chapman.
Commander Chapman, when contacted by the Guyana Chronicle, would only say that the two juveniles are still on the run.
Sources close to the investigation told the Sunday Chronicle that the trio used parts of a bed- frame in the facility to bore the hole through the wall.
This newspaper also understands that while no officer is on close arrest, security personnel who were on duty at the time of the escape are all being investigated. The security system at the facility is also being reviewed.
