Several questioned over death of key witness
FOLLOWING the early Friday morning fatal accident that claimed the life of a key witness in the columnist Freddie Kissoon 2010 faeces-throwing incident, Acting Crime Chief Hugh Jessemy on Saturday said several persons were questioned but only the driver of the ill-fated taxi remains in custody. He related that sleuths are working to verify the story given to them by the taxi driver, who claimed he was also liming at the regular ‘Thursday night Plaisance Line Top’ hang-out when he alleged that he was hired by two men, one of whom placed a gun to his head.
The driver told police that he turned to look at the men and it was then he lost control of the speeding car which slammed head-on into Osmond Griffith. Jessemy said they are trying to pinpoint the loopholes in the incident.
At the time, Griffith, of Durban Backlands, had stopped to urinate at the side of the road when he was struck down, after which he was hurled some distance away. When he landed on the road, it was reported that he had received a broken neck and limbs. Griffith’s child mother, Fidela Duncan, who resides in Sophia told the Guyana Chronicle when she saw his body almost every part was broken and based on reports, it would appear that he was intentionally struck down.
She disclosed that he did not discuss the Freddie Kissoon case with her and he was not jittery about anything since he seemed normal.
Griffith is the father of two small children. Police told the Guyana Chronicle that the driver of the taxi was under the influence and was said to be speeding at the time he struck down Griffith. It was reported that he left the Plaisance Railway Embankment lime with a friend in a car and soon after he asked the driver to stop because he wanted to urinate and it was then he was killed.
