THE Abdulla Hamid annual Summer Camp ended on Saturday afternoon with an on-the-spot visit by Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo and his beautiful wife Sita, as they mingled with the 50-odd participants at the Mackenzie High school basketball court.
Upon arrival,the Prime Minister was briefed by Coach Hamid regarding his(Hamid) two-decades old nursery for basketball players in Linden, which is conducted by the former national player and coach..
Hamid was excited when the Prime Minister visited for the closing ceremony,which utilised three weeks of the summer vacation where 50-plus kids between the ages, three to 19 years, were taught the basics of the game by Hamid.
He was assisted by former national player Shanua Chester and Terron Welch, a current national player who was a product of the annual camp by Hamid.
Hamid urged the Prime Minister to do his best for the development of sport, not only basketball, but the wide spectrum of sport in Guyana.
The Prime Minister was certainly impressed with the work of Hamid and his team and congratulated them for the annual camp, which was endorsed by his wife. Others who were also present at the special occasion included Members of Parliament Mr. Jermaine Figuiera and Mr. Audwin Rutherford, and Assistant National Director of the Community Development Council, Ms. Sandra Adams.
On the final day there were many winners of the various individual skills training. In the Group One 7-11 years category Carmelo Man-son-Hing with 33 points was the winner.In Group two(11-15 years), Ray Marks won with 27 points, while Kayla Brush with 34 points won in the 16-19 girls section, and Kayshawn Adams won in the 16-19 years for boys, notching 28 points, were the top shoots.
Mosi Brush,who is 3 years 9 months old, was the youngest participant among the boys, while for the youngest girls the winner was 7 year old Khadi Layne. (Joe Chapman)
