… Windwards trounce Jamaica by 10 wickets

IN the rain-affected match and a result determined by using the Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) method, Trinidad and Tobago lost by eight wickets to Barbados, who sealed an emphatic victory with five overs remaining in their second-round encounter at the Sion Hill playing field in St Vincent yesterday.Windwards also enjoyed themselves by registering a comprehensive ten-wicket victory over Jamaica at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex while the clash between Leeward Islands and the ICC Americas team was abandoned due to soggy outfield conditions that allowed only 10.2 overs to be bowled at the Park Hill playing field.
Trinidad & Tobago batsmen struggled against the Barbadians with only wicketkeeper Joshua daSilva being able to make an impact with a topscore of 65 that included eight fours off 91 balls while skipper Kirstan Kallicharran contributed 26 off 65 balls.
Deswin Currency (2 for 32) and Nicholas Kirton (2 for 20) were the main wicket-takers.
Rainy conditions forced the officials to use the D/L method and Barbados were set 122 runs to get in 25 overs. The task was made much easier for the Barbadians to celebrate victory after opener Leniko Boucher and triumphant West Indies Youth player Shamar Springer featured in an unbroken 72-run third-wicket stand that proved pivotal.
Boucher top-scored with an unbeaten 73 and he hammered two sixes and six fours off 72 balls while Springer hit two massive sixes in his undefeated 27 off 26 balls.
After having whipped Trinidad and Tobago in their first round on Wednesday, Jamaica suffered reverse fortunes and sustained their biggest defeat to Windward Islands, who crushed them by ten wickets in a low-scoring match at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex.
Jamaica batted first and were restricted to 130 for 9 in 37 overs while Windwards who were set 119 for victory, using the Duckworth-Lewis method, overhauled their target without losing any wickets.
Openers Anil Matthew 58 not out (10×4, 53 balls) and Johann Jeremiah 54 not out (1×6, 7×4, 85 balls) completely dominated the proceedings and left the Jamaicans shell-shocked in not being able to even prise out a single wicket in the one-sided contest. (Brij Parasnath)
