Upper Mazaruni Games 2016… Paruima set to defend male and female titles

THE male and female teams from Paruima in the Upper Mazaruni District, Region Seven, will from tomorrow begin their defence in the football tournament when the annual Upper Mazaruni District Games kick off in host village Kamarang/Warawatta. The teams from Paruima have undoubtedly proven to pose the biggest challenge for their opponents, since they continue to set the bar high on the field of play.
And this year’s challenge is no different, since according to a number of ball- weavers, they have gone the extra mile during preparation to ensure the coveted crown remains in their grasp.
The curtain on the annual games will be drawn with an extravagant opening ceremony on Sunday, which will see an entourage that will be in support of the 12 villages that will be in fierce competition stretching across the districts.
The games consist of four groups with three teams each, that will be involved in three rounds of intense action before heading into the semi-finals and final in a number of disciplines among them football, volleyball, cricket, archery and a number of water sports.
Group ‘A’ consists of hosts Kamarang/Warawatta, Waramadong and Phillipai, Group ‘B’ Kaikan, Jawalla and Chinoweing, Group ‘C’ Kako, Isseneru and Quebanang and Group ‘D’ defending champions Paruima, Imbaimadai and Arau.
Round 1 brings together Kamarang and Waramadong, Kaikan up against Jawalla, Kako challenging Isseneru, while Paruima opposes Imbaimadai.
This year’s games brings with it a different atmosphere which is highly anticipated, since for the first time in the history of the District Games matches will be played under floodlights. The activities will run for a week.
