AFTER championing last Sunday’s swimming competition, Headquarters division ruled the athletics competition to take their 19th consecutive championship title in the annual Guyana Police Force Swimming and Athletics Championships which concluded last Friday evening at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.Headquarters put in leading wins through the performances of Kezia Bess, Tevin Garraway, and Onika Eastman, as they team made it’s way to amassing 624 points for the victory. HQ was almost 300 points ahead of nearest competitor “A” Division which took second place with 37 points.
“C” Division ended third after assembling 195 points, while “B” Division had 106 points to end in fourth.
In the international “A” Class category Guyana took the win with 284 points, Trinidad was second with 137 points, Suriname third with 20 points and St Lucia in fourth with 9 points.
With 30 points Garraway won the “B” Class champion male title, he was followed by HQ’s Kleon Spellen who had 28 points.
“A” Division’s Shion Boyer gathered 28 points from her performances at the Championships and ended with the champion female title, in runner up position was Kezia Bess with 26 points.
Julio Sinclair won champion male for the ‘A” class competition, and Marvin Tinnis was runner up. The top performing female youth athlete was Joanna Archer and the top performing male was Tyrell Peters.
The day’s activities included the exciting 100m, 200m and 400m finals, as well as the 4x100m relays. The HQ team took the women’s 4x100m win, while A Division prevailed in the 4x100m men’s relay.
After finishing third in the women’s 200m, Bess took an easy win in the women’s 400m, where she clocked a time of 1:00.2s, she was followed by A Division’s Tanisha Isaacs who crossed the line in 1:10.5s. Nadia Cox from B Division was third.
In the women’s 200m a fierce fight played out between teammates Onika Eastman and Jevina Sampson. Though Eastman took the win 24.9 seconds, Sampson almost seemed poised to take her down on the final straight. But Eastman maintained her lead and left Sampson to take second place in a time of 25.4 seconds.
Another challenging fight ensued between Garraway and A Division’s Kevin Abbensettes in the men’s 200m. Garraway took the win in 21.4 seconds, with Abbensettes ending just behind in 21.5 seconds.
In the “A” class category Trinidad’s Che Hart went beyond the sprint double taking the wins in not only the men’s 100m (10.6s) and 200m (22.1s), but the 400m (46.0s) as well.
In the 200m Guyana’s Marvin Tinnis finished second in 22.6 seconds. Tinnis also ended with silver in the 100m run in a time of 10.8 seconds.
