ORGANISERS of the upcoming Guyana Police Force Annual Athletics and Swimming Championships received a welcome donation of $200 000 in trophies from furniture giant COURTS, at a handing-over ceremony held yesterday at the company’s flagship Main Street location. COURTSs Finance Director, Neil Boucher, was on hand to make the donations, handing them over to assistant coordinator of the event, Lyndon Wilson.
Boucher remarked that the donation is in keeping with the company’s dedication to supporting sports and related events. No stranger to supporting sporting event, COURTS has been a contributor to the Police Championships for a number of years.
Boucher expressed how happy the company was to once again be on board with the venture, especially since events such as the Championships play an important role within the GPF.
“The Police motto is to protect and serve, basically you have to have an all-round Police Force. We see sport as an integral part in that aspect of it, so we are very happy to be part-sponsor in whatever way we can and these trophies are going to go a very far way. This is one of the many (events) that we do for our social partners and the Guyana Police Force is very keen to have this kind of activity,” Boucher commented.
In his remarks Wilson thank Boucher, and COURTS, for their support noting that the trophies will boost the event in a major way.
“Their contribution is worth a lot to us,” Wilson said.
Touching on what can be expected at this year’s Championships, Wilson mentioned that several regional police force athletes are expected to travel to Guyana to take part in the event, which starts this Sunday with the road race and swimming competitions.
“We have overseas athletes coming from the Caribbean Police Force, who will be here to participate also. The sport will commence on Sunday with the road race at 06.00hrs, the swimming at 10.00hrs then from Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday it will be the athletics, track and field.” Wilson explained.
The swimming segment of the Championships is scheduled to take place at the National Aquatic Centre, in Liliendaal, while the athletics segment will be held at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary. These championships will feature the best athletes of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) as they compete with other athletes from police forces across the Caribbean.
Athletes who do well at this Championships will then move on to represent the GPF at the Inter-Service Annual Athletics Championships (ISAACs), also called the Joint Services Championships, later this year.
