IT RAINED goals yesterday, 24 to be exact, and all in favour of the Georgetown Zone champions Chase Academy, as they destroyed the Guyana Industrial Training Centre (GITC) at the Ministry of Education ground.The defending champions were clinical and fell one goal short of the tournament’s largest margin to date.
Kelsey Benjamin netted one third of the side’s goal with success in the 23rd, 36th, 38th, 61st, 69th, 80th, 81st and 83rd minutes.
Assistance came from a pair of hat-tricks, first from Jeremy Garrett who found the back of the net in the sixth, 21st and 32nd minute and Daniel Floy who netted thrice in the fifth, 11th and 29th minutes.
Braces from Shomol Smith in the fourth and 78th minutes, Stephon Reynolds in the 25th and 76th. Jobe Caesar in the 50th and 64th assisted the score line.
Completing the score were Ryan Hackett, Reshawn Ritch, Marvin Carter and Timothy Alberts who scored in the 19th, 26th, 74th and 78th minutes respectively.
The championship which will be played in the traditional knockout format will be staged in every region and will end on July 31st at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence.
Christianburg/Wismar Secondary have held a stranglehold on the event as they are the current four-time defending champions. The other victors of the most prestigious event in the country were Georgetown Technical Institute (GTI) who won the inaugural event.
Winners of the event will receive $1M towards the funding of a school project and the Championship trophy while the second-place unit will receive $700 000 and the runners-up accolade.
The third- and fourth-placed units will walk away $400 000 and $350 000 and the corresponding trophy. Similarly, $100 000 will be awarded to zone winners.
