TEAM Evolution’s Michael Anthony out-foxed a bunch of approximately 11 cyclists Sunday to win the Seventh Annual Massy Group of Companies-sponsored cycle road race which was staged in the West Demerara Region.Anthony returned a time of one hour 20 minutes 48.63 seconds to win ahead of Geron Williams, Hamza Eastman, Raul Leal, Shaquille Agard and Stephano Husbands respectively. The event, which was sponsored by Massy Group of Companies under its Dr Chase/Seven Seas brands and was coordinated by Hassan Mohamed, saw Anthony bunched with 10 other riders coming for the finish, but with approximately 350 metres remaining, he dropped back to the rear and waited a further 50 metres before he sailed on the outside of the pack on the right hand side of the road and by the time the others in the leading pack could catch themselves, it was too late.
However, United States-based cyclists Geron Williams and Hamza Eastman responded, but to no avail.
With 50 metres remaining, Williams came very close to overtaking Anthony and finished a mere one and a half lengths behind him.
From the start of the race in front of the Wales Police Station, West Bank Demerara at 08:00hrs Sunday morning, the race started at a very fast pace and saw Jamal John, Paul DeNobrega, Andrew Hicks and Orville Hinds get away from the other 28 starters. They led the way into the La Parfaite Harmonie community, but on exiting the West Demerara community and returning to the public road en route to Uitvlugt, Geron Williams and Shaquille Agard, along with Jernel Yearwood, started to chase from the Vreed-en-Hoop turn but were only able to connect to the four leaders at Blankenburg and stuck with them (four leaders), before reaching the homestretch when Anthony staged his attack and won the race.
Of the eight prime prizes that were up for grabs, Alonzo Ambrose won two, while DeNobrega, John, Orville Hinds, Husbands, Jaikarran Sukhai and Andrew Hicks won one each.
Jernel Yearwood won the junior category ahead of Nigel Duguid and Hicks respectively.
The veterans category was won by Team Alanis’ Paul Cho-Wee-Nam. Second was Sukhai and finishing third was Raymond Newton.
Keon Thomas won the mountain bike category ahead of Seon Budhram and Sukhai respectively.
The presentation of prizes to the respective winners was done by Massy’s Dr Chase’s Brand Representative Claude Dhanraj, Seven Seas representative Nirvana Thakur and the company’s Pharmacutical manager Karen Connell, who all made brief remarks thanking the Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club for staging the event and the participants for their presence.
