SANTA CLARA, California – Jamaica saved the worst performance for last in going down 0-3 to Uruguay in their farewell game at Copa America Centenario here inside Levi’s Stadium on Monday night.Already eliminated, Jamaica ended Group C at the foot of the four-team table pointless, behind Mexico and Venezuela on seven points, and Uruguay, who had also been eliminated prior to kick off, on three points.
It was a lethargic Reggae Boyz side which took the field in front of 40,166 spectators in a game of little significance, except for saving face.
The Boyz went behind on 21 minutes when Abel Hernandez raced in behind after a defence-splitting pass from Nicolas Lodeiro to plant a firm shot over the advancing Andre Blake in goal.
The same player almost doubled the advantage when he once again beat the Jamaica defence, only for Blake to come to his team’s rescue with a smart save.
The Boyz managed to conjure up a few half chances here and there, but the South Americans were their masters on the day and just after the hour mark Edinson Cavani, the PSG star, planted a downward header against the base of Blake left hand post.
Uruguay increased their lead on 66 minutes when Ledeiro’s teasing left-sided cross bounced off Hernandez and slammed against the unfortunate Je-Vaughn Watson and past Blake.
As the game went on the Boyz looked more and more ragged as Uruguay launched many attacks with Cavani, in particular, being the most frustrated, having yet to score a goal in Copa America competitions.
Two minutes from the end substitute Matias Corujo completed the rout when he capitalised on Watson’s weak backward header to race in on the helpless Blake and slot home to end yet another frustrating tournament for the Reggae Boyz, who are yet to register a single goal in six Copa America appearances.
