GBTI Independence Jubilee Open Campbell, Persaud gain easy passes to Ladies singles quarters

IN the Ladies singles round of 16, Rebel Open finalist Cristy Campbell made light work of the young teenager Sarah Klautky, crushing her in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Campbell, who is a very consistent retriever, never gave Klautky opportunities to make winners and this caused much frustration for the young player who clearly ran out of options.
In the top half of the draw, the 15-year-old baseliner Shivani Persaud also held her ground in the quarters to wipe out Fiona Bushell 6-2, 7-5, to meet in the semis, last year’s champion Nicola Ramdyhan, who overpowered Kalyca Fraser 6-1, 6-4.
Today from 17:00hrs the highly anticipated quarterfinals will take place.
The bottom half of the Ladies singles category will come alive with two major clashes.
Campbell, who is noted for her high level of fitness, will play last year’s finalist and young powerhouse Afruica Gentle and coach Shelly Daly will play top junior Aretta Dey.
Later, Men’s Over-35 champion Godfrey Lowden will take on the persistent veteran Harry Panday in what can be considered an old rivalry and coach Leyland Leacock will challenge U.S. Diplomat Albert Razick in an attempt to book places in the finals.
