OMAR Brewley’s single strike handed Eagles United the Upper Demerara Football Association’s (UDFA) 2016 league champions title, following their 1-0 win over Amelia’s Ward Panthers on Wednesday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground. The deciding goal came in the 75th minute after both sides had played to a goalless first half.
Brewley was able to get the lone goal of the game when he was fed a good ball in the middle by Titus Deere and his shot eluded the outstretched hands of Cleveland Jonus. That was the deciding goal but the Panthers did give a fight after that.
In their thrust to get the equaliser they did net from a corner but that goal was disallowed for an infringement, by the assistant referee.
The Panthers did get another chance but were unable to find the back of the net and the Eagles held on to the slim margin victory.
Outstanding for the winners, apart from Brewley were the Eagles’ captain Javair Smith who was steadying the play in the middle while at midfield was Herbert Adams and in goal was Shamar Gittens. Notable performances also came from wing-back Nicholas Gentle.
The Panthers did have their moments of brilliance through central defender Keshawn Dey, as well as Stryon Warner, Shane Wilson and Jamal Sampson.
Joel Isaacs of Net Rockers won the Most Goals Trophy for his 11 goals in the 12-team tournament.
In the third place playoff game the Netrockers easily gained a 3-0 win over Milerock.
All the trophies were donated by the Petra Organisation while tickets for the final were distributed to some five hundred schoolchildren by BOSAI Minerals Group (Guyana) Inc. and the Dave and Celena Furniture Store.
Guyana Football Federation vice-president Rawle Adams witnessed the final.
