Vreed-en-Hoop court supervisor charged for stealing $1.1M

A 29-YEAR-OLD supervisor of the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court, accused of stealing a hefty sum from the court, was released on $100,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Wednesday.Richard Boodhai appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The police claim that between January 16 and August 7, 2012, while being a public officer employed at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, he stole the sum of $1,127,000, belonging to, or in the possession of the state, property of the registrar of the Supreme Court .
Boodhai’s lawyer, Peter Hugh, said that his client lives at 410 Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara with his wife and child.
Hugh further pointed out that his client had been under investigation since 2012 and was forced to lodge his passport with the police.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones, presented no facts to the court and had no objections to bail, but noted that Boodhai is currently being investigated in several other matters.
Bail was granted with the condition that Boodhai report to the Criminal Investigation Department fortnightly. The matter was adjourned until June 14.
