Engineer charged with swindling $13M

AN ENGINEER was on Wednesday ordered to post $500,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan after he was slapped with a charge for swindling over $13M from a woman.Michael Persaud, of Public Road Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, was not required to plea to the indictable charge.
The charge read that Persaud, between October 1, 2013 and March 31, 2015 at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of $13M from Gail Tashera.
The court heard that he obtained the money by falsely pretending to the woman that he was in a possession of a plot of land, could have constructed a house on it, pay Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) for the land claim, purchase a vehicle and retain a private investor, knowing same to be false.
Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones made no objection for the accused being granted bail. The matter was adjourned until June 15.
