ZAFAR Khan, 28, accused of driving motor pick-up GSS 9553 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of 82-year-old Keturah Dalgetty at Fifth Street, 2nd Avenue, Block ‘Y’ Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara on May 3 last, appeared yesterday before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in connection with the incident.He pleaded not guilty to the charges proffered against him and was granted $500,000 bail. His driver’s licence was also suspended, and he was ordered to report weekly to the Golden Grove Police Station.
Dalgetty, of 215 Samatta Point, Grove, EBD, was struck down at about 06:00 hrs on the day in question when Khan, reportedly reversing on the access road, hit the elderly woman and reversed over her. After finding the woman unconscious near his truck and realizing what had happened, Khan rushed her to the Diamond Diagnostic Hospital, where she subsequently succumbed to her injuries.
In his bail application, Khan’s lawyer explained that Khan is a single parent of a 4-year-old daughter and resides with his parents in Grove, EBD.
The matter has been adjourned to May 24.
