BUXTON United edged Monedderlust 3-2 while Pele were held to a 1-1 draw by bottom-of-the-table Georgetown Football Club (GFC) when play in the Guyana Football Federation’s Stag Elite League continued on Thursday evening at the Leonora, West Coast Demerara Sports Facility.The win for Buxton United propels them to 11 points in the league and sixth in the point standings, while Monedderlust are currently seventh in the standings with six points.
Pele, with the draw, are now fourth with 17 points while GFC remain at the bottom of the standings with two points.
Playing on a damp surface on Thursday evening, Buxton United’s Esan Hamer opened the scoring with a 21st minute goal and Denver Dennis made it 2-0 for the East Coast team from the penalty spot after Monedderlust’s custodian Selwyn Jack was given marching orders (red card) in the 30th minute for intentionally fouling an advancing Buxton player in the 18-yard box.
Despite being reduced to 10 players, Monedderlust were able to pull one back in the 40th minute through a Delbert Wilson goal.
Resuming for the second half, Buxton United extended their lead through a Rondae Assanah 62nd minute strike.
Fourteen minutes later, Monedderlust’s Akeem Watts found the back of the Buxtonians’ net but they failed to find the equaliser during the remaining 18 minutes of the game.
In the feature game, Travis Grant and Keron Solomon scored for Pele and GFC respectively.
The draw earned both teams one point each.
To date, all four teams that showcased their talent on Thursday have completed 12 of their 14 matches.
Buxton United won three of their encounters and lost seven while drawing two. To date Buxton have scored 11 goals and conceded 17.
Monedderlust, on the other hand, have to date won one match, lost eight and drew three. They have scored 10 goals so far and conceded 28.
Pele have won five matches, lost a similar number and drawn two. They have 14 goals to their name and conceded 15.
Meanwhile, the league was scheduled to continue last evening at the same venue with league leaders Slingerz tackling second-place Fruta Conquerors, while third-place Alpha United were down to clash with fifth-place Guyana Defence Force.
