Opening round of Mayor’s Cup football tournament affected by rain

THE opening round of the 22nd annual Mayor’s Cup footballtTournament has been affected by wet conditions that has affected all outdoor sports locally.However, May 5 has been tentatively fixed for the start of the annual event that is being coordinated by former national player and coach Lennox `mullen’ Arthur.According to Arthur, the Victoria ground where the two opening matches were slated to be staged today is under water from the consistent rainfall over the past week or so, however, Arthur is of the hope that the rain would cease over the next few days and the tournament will kick-start.
According to Arthur , the venue will remain the same (Victoria ground) and in the first match, Mahaica of the East Coast of Demerara wil;l take on Eagles United of linden, while the feature match brings together BV/Triumph of East Coast Demerara and Milerock of Linden.
The winning team of the competition will drawn down $700,000, while the second, third and fourth place teams will earn $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
All four top teams will also receive trophies and medals.
