VENDORS of the Stabroek Market were yesterday made aware of the budding plans for the enhancement of the area where they ply their trade.During a consultation with members of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), vendors were told about the plans to reorganise and beautify the Stabroek Market area.
In a release from the M&CC, it was stated that “this consultation session will allow vendors and other persons who use the Stabroek Market area and who ply their various trades to make suggestions and raise concerns.”
The meeting, the release said, helped to shape the proposal for the development, beautification and reorganisation of that section.
The Council has embarked on a programme to restore and reorganise the state of the city’s environs and to reshape its landscape.
“(The) Greater Georgetown Development Plan alluded to the need to address congestion in the city, which included provision of onsite parking by businesses for customers, reorganizing of vending, provision of effective building control and the general improvement of the scenery in the city,” the statement said.
This integrative development plan of the municipality would allow the council and its stakeholders to deliberate on the future developmental plans that would be beneficial to the municipality and all of its vendors.
There is high anticipation that these plans would restore the pristine beauty of Georgetown. The Stabroek Market Square is one of the prime commercial spaces in Georgetown, where there is a variety of commercial activities.
However, the area has become cluttered over the years because of a consistent increase in commercial activities. The present Stabroek Market structure was declared open in 1881 by Governor Cornelius Hendricksen Kortright.
