Mahaicony man arrested over mom’s murder

A 53-year-old man, who is reportedly a drug addict, is in police custody pending an investigation into the murder of his elderly mother at their Good Faith, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara home Thursday night. The woman has been identified as Cecilia Madray, 75, who was the victim of constant domestic and sexual abuse meted out to her, allegedly by her addict son.

She was found in a pool of blood on the floor of her home around 22:00 hrs by members of the Community Policing Group (CPG), after neighbours heard loud noises coming from the house. The Guyana Chronicle understands that the bloodied body was covered with a mosquito net and there was a gaping wound to the head.

Villagers said that the drug addict would often beat his mother for money to buy drugs and to satisfy his craving for alcohol. Reports also indicate that he would sell valuables from the house and use the money to purchase illicit drugs.

This newspaper understands that the man told police that his mother was the victim of an accident when she fell down, but the police did not believe him.

According to residents, after Madray’s husband died, she relocated to a foreign country to live with her daughter, who also passed away subsequently. Madray then returned to Guyana and lived with her son, whom villagers described as a habitual user of cocaine.

Police are awaiting a post-mortem before charging the suspect.
