Four in custody over Good Hope farmers’ fiery deaths

POLICE detectives have detained five persons in connection with the deaths of rice-farming couple, Mohamed Munir, 75, and his wife Bibi Jamila Munir, 70, who perished in their Good Hope Public Road, East Bank Essequibo home last Sunday.This was confirmed by Divisional Commander Senior Superintendent Stephen Mansell. The dead couple’s handyman is among those in custody and police sources have disclosed that the men in custody are known to the police. Ranks from the Force’s Major Crimes Unit are spearheading the investigation.
Mohamed and his wife Jamilla, who were well known rice farmers, died on Sunday night after bandits broke into their home and later set it alight,leaving the couple trapped in their heavily grilled, two-storey house. Their charred bodies were retrieved from the debris after the fire was extinguished.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Islamic Trust, the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex (ACIC), the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman (SADR) and the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) have called on citizens, especially the Muslim community, to work with those in authority to maintain peace and security in the country.
