Wayne `Big Truck’ Braithwaite made the third defence of his World Boxing Council cruiserweight title on April 17, 2004 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Guyanese southpaw faced Louis Azille of Dominica and retained the title through Unanimous Decision. Azille was down in round three following the completion of the contest Braithwaite complained that he had hurt his right hand early hence his inability to stop his opponent.
The victory earned Braithwaite his 21th victory in as many fights. It was the second meeting for the two cruiserweights.
They first met in November 2001in Las Vegas when Braithwaite turned on the pressure early and was rewarded with a third round Technical Knock Out (TKO). The win gave the Guyanese the right to fight Vincenzo Cantatore for the WBC title the following year.
Braithwaite was given the nickname `Big Truck’ by boxing promoter Odinga Lumumba in 1997. Even at that infantile stage of his career the Plaisance-born cruiserweight had shown that he possessed power to rival that of Guyana Power and Light.
In October 2002 he became the second Guyanese to win a world title following on the heels of Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis in February 2001. Braithwaite softened the Italian Cantatore in the early part of their WBC cruiserweight championship contest and applied finishing touches in the 10 round to win by TKO.
He had three successful defences before losing to Jean Marc Mormeck. Braithwaite has won 24 of 30 fights. . He has been defeated six times in his last nine fights dating back to the April 2005 loss to Mormeck and will turn 41 in August.
