UNDER the theme reflect, inspire, and celebrate, a grand Golden Jubilee Youth Folk Explosion was staged on Saturday at the National Cultural Centre (NCC).The Youth Concert which attracted a significant audience, included sing-a-long folk music, dance, poetry and dramatic performances by schools, youth groups and dance companies that came together on one platform to showcase Guyana’s rich cultural diversity.

According to a release, each performance created a hyped reaction from the audience, especially the Queh Queh presentation by the National Drama Company, ‘Young girls lock it up’; the calypso piece performed by Dominique Haywood from Diamond Secondary School; the ‘Cassava Processing’ dance performed by St Cuthbert’s Mission; and the ‘Baccoo Speaks’ by Nathaniel Powers and Noshavyah Walcott from the West Demerara Secondary, Region Three.

The ‘Good Old Days’ dance performed by Mystic Dance Group and a medley of Folk songs performed by the Joint School Choir, Region Four, East Coast Demerara, among others, were also well received by the audience.

“The items performed at Guyana’s Golden Jubilee Youth Folk Explosion should be repeated at various upcoming cultural festivals commemorating Guyana Golden Jubilee Celebration, especially the Queh Queh presentation performed by the National Drama Company,” Director of Sports and Entertainment, Christopher Jones said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Nicolette Henry, who described the performances as “well-coordinated”, said she was pleased with each segment.
