WITH the success of the Boyce/Jefford Classic track meet, the organisers will now be introducing the Boyce and Jefford Relay Festival and Family Fun Day, which was officially launched on Friday at a simple ceremony at the 704 Lounge and Sports BarSet for April 24 at the Police Sports Club ground, the event will include 10 relay events, five-a-side Football, Softball Cricket and Dominoes, as well as a $1M 100m race between Colin “Poison” Boston of Big Boss Trucking Services and Cadogan of Dynasty.
Purse money for the $1M race is being put forth by the participants, who are putting their money where their mouths are to settle the final score to see who is the faster of the two. Each participant is depositing $500,000 apiece with a winner take all.
In other prize money to be won, first-place winners of the relay will walk away with $20,000; second- place finishers will take $12,000 and third-place finishers will receive $8,000 for each race. The football, cricket and domino events are also set to have cash prizes up for grabs.
According to Chairman of the Boyce/Jefford Organisation, Colin Boyce, though the event is only now coming to fruition, this relay festival is one that has been two years in the making, and the organisation will be doing everything to ensure that this event is just as big and successful as the annual Boyce/Jefford Classic held in Linden.
“Despite being a first for Boyce/Jefford, it is actually a two-year-old concept for us, as there was a clarion call for us to do something in Georgetown given the success we have had in Linden with the Boyce/Jefford Classic.
We want to make this event as big as possible. A lot of fun, competition and rivalry are expected on the day, quite a lot of cash will be on offer,” Boyce said.
Representing the National Sports Commission and making remarks on behalf of the Director of Sport, was NSC representative Seon Erksine, who lauded the Boyce/Jefford Organisation for coming with the event and expressed the Commission’s joy to be associated with the event.
Relays for the Festival include the 4×100, 4x200m 4×400, sprint medleys, and distance medleys for both the male and female categories.
In the football competition, participating teams include Sparta Boss, Agricola, Police, Rich Boys, Wartsila, Barber Shop, Brazilians and Customs. Winners of the football competition are set to walk away with a $50,000 top prize, while second place is in for $25,000.
The cricket competition will see the Floodlight Masters coming up against the Boyce/Jefford Stars for the male softball match, while the Trophy Stall Angels will contend against Mike’s Well Woman on the female side.
There is also set to be a media race, as well as several side attractions, including trampolines and bouncy castle for the kids.
The event has received sponsorship from Banks DIH under their Smalta brand, with Banks DIH Non-Alcoholic Manager, Clayton McKenzie, noting the company’s elation to be associated with the event.
