FORMER President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), Colwyn King, exited the High Court on Friday a free man, absolved of a charge of rape.A 12-member jury found King not guilty of carnal knowledge of a girl, allegedly committed on October 6, 2009. The verdict was in a 10-2 proportion even after the 12-member jury had deliberated for more than two and a-half hours.

The trial was held in camera, and
the verdict was announced before Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who told King, “You escaped from the law today, but you can’t escape from God.”

A smiling King exited the court room in relative ease, and went his way even as his Attorney Darren Wade fretted about the Judge’s comments to King.

The State Prosecutors were Narissa Leander and Tuanna Hardy. The trial commenced on March 5, and eight witnesses were called by the State to testify.
