No bail for vendor on robbery charge

A CLOTHES vendor of West Ruimveldt was on Wednesday remanded when he made his appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates Court charged with robbery under arms.Twenty-seven-year old Dwayne Harding pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on March 22, 2016, while being armed with a dangerous weapon, a cutlass, he robbed Calvin Mercurius of two gold chains valued $90,000.

According to the facts presented by Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers, the defendant went up to the virtual complainant and snatched his chains. He then ran into a bus and made good his escape.

Prosecutor Jeffers also told the court that Harding had made an oral confession when arrested, saying that he took the chain.

Jeffers objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence and the fact that used a weapon while he was committing the alleged act.

Attorney-at-Law Paul Fung-a-Fat, who represented Harding, told the court a different version of the story. He stated that on the day in question, Harding and the virtual complainant’s younger brother were involved in a scuffle on the road and while Mercurius was assisting his brother he was injured.

Harding was however remanded until April 8, 2016.
