Port Kaituma shopkeeper badly chopped by bandits

A PORT Kaituma businessman was last Saturday night viciously chopped by two men who were armed with a piece of wood and cutlasses during an invasion of his shop at Port Kaituma backlands.Deon Charles, 38, told the Guyana Chronicle that he was locking up his shop from the outside when the two men barged into the building and told him that they had come to kill him.

Charles, who refused to be cowed, said, “When I hear that I pick up a wood and lash he.” A scuffle ensued, during which the shopkeeper was badly chopped. But his wife came up from behind one of the attackers and dealt him a lash with a mop-stick.

The couple put up a gallant fight but were overpowered by the armed men. However, neighbours were alerted and came to their rescue. Charles was taken to the Port Kaituma Hospital, then air-dashed to the city the following day.

Charles, having sustained multiple chop wounds to both legs and hands, is now warded at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
