BEN Mekdeci, Makela Harding and Samuel Ince-Carvalhal were the outstanding players of the Guyana Squash Association’s (GSA)Junior Skill Level Tournament which concluded yesterday at the Georgetown Club courts.Sponsored by Toucan Industries under its Kraft brand in collaboration with Digicel Guyana, Mekdeci, competing in Category `A’ of the nine-category tournament, defeated Alec Melville 2-1 (11-4, 10-12, 11-8) in the final game of the category to come out on top.
Playing in category `B’,Harding defeated Rebecca Lowe 7-11, 11-6, 11-4 to win the category,while Ince-Carvalhal beat Gianni Carpenter 7-11, 11-7, 12-10, 17-15 to take the category `C’ title.
The most improved girl’s award went to Abecelli Cadogan, while on the distaff side, Carpenter came out on top.
Harding was adjudged the most Outstanding Female Player of the tournament, as she did not drop a single game during the one-week tournament, while Ince –Carvalhal who dropped just two games was adjudged the Most Outstanding Male Player.
In other results, Marissa Wiltshire placed second to Mekdeci in Category `A’, while Shamere Wiltshire and Alec Melville placed third and fourth respectively.
In Category `B’, Rebecca Lowe was second to Harding, while Miah Collins placed third.
Carpenter was second in Category `C,’ while Michael Alphonso and Ethan Jones placed third and fourth respectively.
Category `D’was won by A. Cadogan, who shared a three-way tie with Keristen Rose and Madison Fernandes, but after a count back, it was down to Cadogan and Rose and this also came up with a tie and a further count back on points saw Cadogan coming out on top with 160 points as against Rose’s 134 points.
In Category `E’, Nechuemyiah Levans won ahead of James Mekdeci, Morian Baksh and Kamir Khan respectively.
M. Allicock won Category `F’ ahead of Mikal Persaud and C. DeAbreu respectively, while Jeanta Adams was the winner of Category `G’. Second was T. Edwards and third place went to Beau Fernandes.
Category `H’ was won by Luis DaSilva ahead of Shylio Azearro and Zajuaan Munroe respectively.
In the “Smallies” category which is Category `I’, Christina Fernandes was the winner, edging out Noah Rahaman and Melia Maikoo respectively.
Prior to the presentation of prizes to the respective winners, tournament coordinator Tiffany Solomon, a former national squash and hockey player thanked the sponsors Kraft/Toucan Industries and Digicel for their continued support to the tournament. Solomon also thanked the players and their parents for making the tournamengt the success it was.
