THE Guyana Amateur Boxing Association has been given a shot in the arm after receiving a quantity of mattresses from Food for the Poor. The GABA recently collected 25 bunk mattresses from the entity, which would be used at the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis gym in Albouystown.
The gym houses boxers preparing for local and overseas competitions. GABA had written to Food for the Poor last year requesting the support and the donation was handed over to Technical Director Terrence Poole.
GABA president Steve Ninvalle, while thanking Food for the Poor, declared that the presentation was timely, since the association would be encamping a schoolboys team and a junior team soon.
“It is a timely gesture as in a few weeks we will be commencing encampment for the International Schoolboys and at present those at the Andrew Lewis gym are worn.
This would greatly enhance our ability to comfortably house athletes,” Ninvalle said.
Food for the Poor Inc. is an ecumenical Christian non-profit organisation, based in Coconut Creek, Florida, USA, that provides food, medicine, and shelter, among other services, to the poor in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Apart from Guyana; Food for the Poor Inc. operates in Antigua, Belize, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Peru, St Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, St Vincent and the United States of America.
GABA would be hosting the Caribbean’s first International Schoolboys and Juniors tournament next month. The event would be staged on April 29 and 30 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. So far Barbados, Jamaica and St Lucia have confirmed participation at the novel tournament.
