THE Viraat Sabhaa (Guyana) has joined the local Hindu community in observing Maha Shivraatri, which is observed on the 14th day of the dark half of the month Phalgun. The occasion is celebrated with steadfast prayers, deep mediation, and complete abstinence, the Sabha said in a release.
On Maha Shivraatri, special emphasis is placed on the worship of the Lingam, which symbolises auspiciousness. Hindus worship God in a three-folded approach; that is: Eshwar — with a name; Sagun Brahma — a name with a form; and Nirgun Braham, which depicts God as nameless, attribute-less and formless.
Information provided by the Maha Shiv Puran confirms that Lord Shiva manifested as Joyotir Lingam, in the form of radiant light and energy, in the presence of the creative and regenerative forces of the universe.
This night is considered the most auspicious of all Chaturdasi, since the Lord presented himself as the supreme source of all lights. Maha Shivraatri provides a great opportunity for the aspirant to be established in the mode of purity and goodness, which is called Sattwa.
Lord Shiva symbolises Trinity, which is common in all religions. As Shiva, he is called the Lord of Vardaan – the giver of Boons. When unconditional love is fully expressed at the Lord’s feet, all desires and expectations are fulfilled.
Maha Shivraatri therefore creates an avenue for the strengthening of a bond between Man and God, which adds to the confidence of the devotee’s existence, thus dispelling all hopelessness and other negative propensities.
“May this opportunity be grasped by all our Hindu brothers and sisters, wherein all devotees could lovingly embrace the Lord’s feet, which could secure total fulfillment to life of all seekers. The Viraat Sabhaa extends Maha Shivraatri greetings to all, and prays that Lord Shiva’s blessings will allow favourable conditions to prevail in our entire country,” the release said.
Satsanghs will be held countrywide to observe this occasion, and persons are asked to make every effort to attend and participate.
