THE 19th annual Dr Cheddi Jagan Memorial Cycle Road Race is scheduled for Sunday in Berbice, starting at 09:00hrs from outside the People’s Progressive Party/Civic’s Freedom House office on Main Street, New Amsterdam.The event, which is being coordinated by national cycle coach Hassan Mohamed and is being sponsored by sporting enthusiasts, will have at stake prizes for the top six overall finishers as well as the top three finishers in the junior, female, veteran and mountain bike categories.
The first Over-60 rider to cross the finish line will also be rewarded for his effort.
The defending overall champion is Team Evolution’s Orville Hinds who stopped the clock at two hours 38 minutes 29.44 seconds to win the event.
The junior category was won by Raphael Leung, while the mountain bike and female categories were won by Oziah McAully and Marica Dick respectively.
Walter Isaacs was the first Over-60 rider to cross the finish line.
Last year, Alanzo Greaves placed second to Hinds in the overall placings, while Raynauth Jeffrey, Robin Persaud, Hamzah Eastman and Raul Leal occupied the other top four places.
Andrew Hicks and Christopher Griffith placed second and third respectively in the junior category, while Julio Melville and Deoraj Garbarran were second and third respectively in the mountain bike division.
Whitney Poyer and Toshawana Doris were second and third respectively in the female category.
This year, as is usual, the veterans, females and mountain bikers will battle from the starting point (Main Street, New Amsterdam) to Hogstye on the Corentyne Coast and will turn back to finish at Port Mourant, while the juniors and seniors will engage each other from the starting point and proceed to Number 51 Village, Corentyne before turning back to finish at Port Mourant.
Eight prime prizes are at stake during the course of the event and interested cyclists from Georgetown, East Bank Demerara and Linden are asked to note that transportation from Georgetown to New Amsterdam will leave the Ministry of Education, Department of Culture, Youth and Sport, Main Street, Georgetown at 05:00hrs.
