GUYANESE-born Dennis Andries, at age 39 secured his 42nd professional victory following a points-decision win over David Sewell on February 27, 1993. Andries had just moved up from the light heavyweight division to cruiserweight.
In his previous fight he had dropped a majority decision to Frenchman Akim Tafer while the European Boxing Union (EBU) cruiserweight title was at stake. Andries turned pro in 1978 and won the World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight title eight years later following a split decision victory over J. B. Williamson on April 30, 1986.
He made one successful defence before taking on Thomas `Hitman’ Hearns (The Motor City Cobra) in March 1987.
Hearns pulled the crown from the head of the Guyanese when referee Isaac Herrera stopped the contest at one minute and 26 seconds of the 10th round to prevent Andries any further punishment.
However, Andries bounced back and was again named WBC champion when he TKOed Tony Willis on February 21, 1989 to take the vacant title
Nicknamed `The Hackney Rock’, Andries had his last fight on December 14, 1996 and left with a record of 49 victories (30 KOos), 14 defeats and two draws.
