ANOTHER attempt will be made to play off the eagerly anticipated Mohan Memorial Cup tomorrow after heavy overnight rain on Monday, followed by consistent drizzles on Tuesday, forced the organisers to cancel the four-team tournament. The tournament, featuring Hawaiian Arctic Cricket Club (HACC) Under-19s, Blairmont Blazers, D’Edward, and West Berbice Achievers, is serving a two-fold purpose, to commemorate the fifth death anniversary of Kuntie Mohan, the mother of HACC president Narchand ‘Archie’ Mohan and also the resuscitation of the C-3 Park which has been dormant for several years.
The main driving force behind the Park’s resuscitation is Canada-based Mohan, whose club in Toronto has been dominating the Scarborough Cricket Association (SCA) Premiere League tournament, winning the title for the past six consecutive seasons. This success has spurred him to “give back” to his home village, Cotton Tree, West Bank Berbice.
Among the main sponsors are Mohan’s Contracting Firm of Toronto and the 747 Bar & Lounge at Lethem, owned by Mohan’s nephew Vishal and his wife Rena Mohan, HACC and Trophy Stall. The former will be providing the winning trophy and cash incentive prizes.
Meanwhile, Mohan took the opportunity on Tuesday to honour two notable members of the community, making them honorary members of HACC and also for their contribution to the Aditya Kids Foundation of Bath Village, West Coast, Berbice of which he’s also one of the directors.
Former Region 5 Chairman Bindrabhan Bisnauth and popular cricket commentator Inderjeet Persaud were presented with uniforms worn by the HACC team in Canada, while the former was the recipient of a plaque for the outstanding support given to Aditya Foundation and Inderjeet received a HACC 2015 championship ring.
