Not guilty of carnal knowledge

AN excited and relieved Thron Cameron exited the High Court yesterday afternoon, a free man after a jury found him not guilty of carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old girl in an incident which reportedly took place nine years ago at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara.According to the indictment, Thron Cameron allegedly had carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old girl in the county of Demerara on August 2, 2007.

After the verdict was announced, Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry told Cameron that he was free to go, since the jury had found him not guilty. He clasped his hands and smiled as he walked out the courtroom, then he began to run.

The 12-member jury took more than three hours to deliberate, and even returned to the courtroom for further directions from the presiding Judge yesterday.

The defence called four witnesses, while the state called five witnesses during the trial.

The state was represented by Prosecutors Stacy Goodings and Tuanna Hardy, while the defence counsel was Maxwell McKay in association with Folio Richards.
