THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has noted with disgust a despicable and malicious assault launched on the entity. It has been recognised that a consorted effort is being made to discredit and further taint the agency’s already fragile image, while baseless claims of corruption and other wrongdoings are unjustly being levied against the agency’s senior functionaries.

The Council is making it abundantly clear to these political actors, some of whom we regret to say lie within the employ of the M&CC, that we are aware of their unbecoming actions and what they seek to attain.
Verified information has shown that many spurious, unsupported claims against the Council are being made by this very group, particularly in the media.

It has been verified also that a disgruntled former employee, who was recently dismissed from City Hall, and a Councillor seeking his own political gain have teamed up with a political party contending this Local Government Election in pursuing this divide-and-conquer campaign tactic at City Hall’s offices. We are aware that the campaign rhetoric, regardless of its porosity, is the alleged corruption and wrongdoing taking place at the Council — which unfortunately still carries an unfavourable past that is still very fresh in everyone’s mind.

The Council urges that citizens do not fall prey to such deceit, as a new dawn has come for our capital. We have commenced repair and revitalisation works across the city with the return of once unavailable but vital services to Georgetown residents. The Council remains committed to its obligations according to the Municipal and District Council’s Act Chapter 28:01. We will not deter or relieve ourselves of our duties, regardless of the hurdles.
