NOTABLE DATES

GUYANESE featherweight icon Cliff Anderson had a grand total of four fights in February of 1946. The number is more than what some current boxers would have in a year.On February 18, Anderson knocked out Tommy Madine in the seventh round of a scheduled eight-rounder to improve his record to 16 victories against two defeats and a similar number of draws.
One week later Madine, a native of Belfast, Ireland, matched gloves with Anderson for the second time that month. This time the 24-year-old Guyanese won by a points-decision. Both fights were held in England, Anderson’s adopted homeland.
The year was a busy one for Anderson who entered the ring 13 times. He came away with 11 victories and two losses. In 1947 Anderson made two unsuccessful attempts at the Commonwealth featherweight title. Both times he fought Al Phillips. On March 18, he lost by points to the Englishman.
In the rematch four months later, the Guyanese was disqualified in round eight by referee Andrew Smith for illegal blows. Born in October 1921, Anderson died in December 1998. The Government renamed the National Sports Hall, Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in his honour.
