Wanted man Delroy Joseph called ‘Barney’ who was shot after Police swooped down on a house at Nicolay Street in New Amsterdam, Berbice last week, appeared on Tuesday at the New Amsterdam Court and was remanded to prison after police instituted charges of trafficking narcotics, robbery under arms and break and enter and larceny.Appearing shackled before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus, the prisoner, pleaded not guilty to the charge of trafficking narcotics but neither he nor his co accused Paul Wilson were required to plea to the remaining indictable charges.
However, the magistrate recognizing that Joseph remained shackled even as the charge was read, questioned the reason for the restraint, and was told by the Police that it was for security reasons.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Sherriff, said on July 10, last year, ranks were on a mobile patrol along the Heathburn Public Road in the vicinity of the GuyOil gas station, when Joseph, who was riding a motor bicycle was observed with a black travelling bag acting suspiciously. Confronted by police, the defendant dropped the bag and fled. The bag, when opened contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems which amounted to one kilogram.
Since July, checks were constantly made for the defendant. However acting on a tip off, the police swooped on a house at Nicolay Street, where the defendant and others were arrested.
Meanwhile, on December 16, Joseph and Wilson, are alleged to have been armed with a gun when they robbed Barof[ one name] of $150,000, property of David Armogan.
On that date, Barof, was the cashier at the Sand and Supplies Stores at Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje, when the defendants armed with a gun demanded cash, before discharging a round and relieving the employee of the monies.
Between January 4 and 5, last the defendants broke and entered the home of Kenanther Adolph , of Budhan Scheme , Vryheid Village, and stole a 32’’ flat screen television valued $90,000.
On the following day at Alexander Street, New Amsterdam Police said the defendants broke and entered the home of Ockley Hinds, removing a 42’ television and a television stand totaling $179,760.
Police Sergeant Phillip Sherrif objected to bail, highlighting the prevalence of the offence.
The prosecutor told the court that several others matters were pending and charges were likely to be instituted shortly.
Questioned by the Court as to whether they had anything to say, the defendants responded negatively.
Consequently the men were refused bail and remanded to prison until February 15 for report .
