FINLAND-based Guyanese defender Walter Moore said that he’s hoping to get a call from head coach Jamaal Shabazz to be included on the Golden Jaguars for the 2016/2017 CFU Caribbean Cup. The competition, which is scheduled to take place during officially-sanctioned FIFA international match periods, giving Member Associations the opportunity to select their best possible teams, will kick off in March (21-29) with all of the countries except Haiti, Jamaica, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago, who are all still participating in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
The Golden Jaguars were drawn alongside Puerto Rico and Anguilla, in the 26-team Caribbean Football Union (CFU) tournament which is being sponsored by Scotiabank.
“I’m still fully committed to the Golden Jaguars programme and looking forward to the CFU Caribbean Cup,” Moore told Chronicle Sport in an interview yesterday.
Moore was an important component on Shabazz’s team that narrowly missed out on a spot in the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
The 31-year-old Moore, in reflecting on what he still believes was Guyana’s best assembled National team, said, “For me this tournament is where it all began with the likes of Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington, the late Sean Bishop and Leslie ‘Fat Man’ Holligan and other great players in 2006/07 … seeing us go all the way would be a massive achievement for me.”
Moore plies his trade in Finland with FF Jaro in the Finnish Premier League; the top flight of professional football in the Nordic countries.
“Like (Christopher) Nurse pointed out, with the STAG Elite League back home no one position is safe and I’m not one to shy away from a challenge,” said Moore.
Meanwhile, the player whose name is always mentioned in an argument, as the best Guyanese left-back, said that he’s “also looking ahead of my career I’m a assistant coach for our U-15 team which is rank 4th best team in the country (Finland)”.
“My new season is looking good so far, we played four games and won three and the team is getting stronger with the players getting confident ahead of the 2016 season in Finland. I have one year left on my contract with FF Jaro so the coach asked me to take more responsibility in the team, and so far I’ve been doing that as a leader and also as the captain,” Moore highlighted.
Moore’s first taste at professional football was at Trinidad and Tobago Pro-League Club North East Stars in 2006, and had played for the Shabazz-owned Caledonia AIA (2007–2013) as well as Charlotte Eagles Football Club in the USA.
In 2013, Moore signed with FC Vostok in the Kazakhstan Premier League, making 31 appearances for the outfit but then transferred to their rivals FC Astana-1964 the following year.
While many only want to be remembered as the best in the game, the former Fruta Conquerors defender’s goal is to play a part in helping as much as he could his fellow countrymen to play overseas, while achieving as much as he could before saying goodbye.
