THE Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) last Wednesday launched the third edition of its Guyana Bank of Trade and Industry (GBTI) Inter-secondary school tapeball competition. The competition would be played by four secondary schools based in the Rose Hall Town and Port Mourant areas and would be played as part of the RHTY&SC ‘Say No to Drugs, Suicide, Crime and Say Yes to Education and Sports’ campaign.
Secretary/CEO of the club, Hilbert Foster, stated that the tapeball competition would be contested at both the male and female levels by the Lower Corentyne, J.C Chandisingh, Corentyne Comprehensive and Port Mourant Secondary schools.
Players have to be under the age of 17 and must be born on or after the first of September 1999. The main aims of the tournament are to promote positive social messages, to promote cricket as a safe alternative to a life on the road and to celebrate Guyana’s 50th Independence anniversary.
The RHTY&SC would also be using the tournament to identify new cricketing talents for the club’s junior and female cricket teams. Foster disclosed that the club during 2016 would be hosting numerous cricket tournaments at the primary and secondary school, Under-15, Under-17, Under-19, Second Division and Female levels, as it continues its massive cricket development programme, the main objective being to lift the standard of the game in Berbice.
Foster expressed gratitude to the management and staff of GBTI for their continued sponsorship of the tournament and issued an assurance that it would be well organised and would achieve all the objectives set.
Manager of the GBTI’s Port Mourant branch, Ghoeblall Mahadeo, stated that the bank was pleased to partner with the RHTY&SC once again, as it was very impressed with the hosting of the first two tournaments.
GBTI, Mahadeo noted, is fully aware of its corporate responsibilities, and as such, special emphasis is placed on education, sport and youth development.
Mahadeo congratulated the RHTYSC for its outstanding work that targets youths and urged the organisation to uphold the high standard it has set itself in the past.
The top teams in the tournament would win trophies and other prizes, while the outstanding performers would take home trophies and medals.
