Manslaughter trial begins today

THE manslaughter trial in which Seelall Pharbu, called ‘Sugrim’, is the accused begins today before Justice Madam Jo-Ann Barlow and a mixed jury.A 12-member jury was empanelled on Wednesday following five challenges by the Prosecution and the defence.
Lawyer Shonnette Austin is conducting the case for the prosecution, while Attorney-at-law Glen Hanoman is appearing for the defence.
When the trial continues today the prosecutor will deliver her opening address to the jury.
The accused is charged with having on November 13 , 2011 in the county of Demerara, unlawfully killed Premaul Rampersaud called ‘Romel’.
