Bonner ensures Leeward Islands Hurricanes record their first win

THE Leeward Islands Hurricanes recorded their first win in this year’s West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) NAGICO Super50 sponsored tournament which resumed yesterday with second round matches.

Playing at the St Paul’s Sports Complex, St Kitts, the Leewards defeated the Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners by 14 runs in a closely-fought encounter to theoretically stay in contention for a semi-final place.

Led by a third-wicket partnership of 98 between man-of-the-match Nkrumah Bonner (79) and Montcin Hodge (66), the Leeward Islands Hurricanes reached a challenging 242 for eight in their allotted 50 overs after being inserted to take first strike.

The Marooners threatened to overhaul the total but was undone by the spin of Rakeem Cornwall who finished with the impressive figures of four for 21 from 9.1 overs. He was well supported by Daron Cruickshank who claimed three for 28 in six overs.

Bonner, who struck two fours and a similar number of sixes, came together with Hodge (five fours) with the score on 62, after opener Shane Jeffers 32, with five fours, had given his team a fair start.

After Hodge and Bonner were dismissed, wickets fell at regular intervals but the eventual total proved enough for the Marooners who are still to register a win.

Mark Deyal ended with three for 32 from six overs while the experienced Ryan Hinds took two for 46 from 10.

For the Marooners, opener Vikash Mohan slammed a 96-ball 79 which included seven fours while skipper Chadwick Walton chipped in with 39 and Cassius Burton 23.
