AFTER a four-year hiatus the flagship domestic tournament on the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) calendar of events – the National senior table tennis championships – is scheduled to run off January 15-18, 2016 at the National Gymnasium.Proprietor of The Trophy Stall of Bourda Market, Ramesh Sunich, has come on board to support the association’s efforts in hosting the championships.
His organisation has sponsored trophies for three of the six categories.
Sunich indicated that he and his company were happy to partner with a sport that has been making the effort and doing fairly well in the international arena. “We are happy to be on board supporting the efforts of our table tennis talents in Guyana and the Guyana Table Tennis Association since the smaller sports need more support, he said
Sunich also said he would be partnering with the GTTA for a junior project in February
The tournament provides the opportunity for Guyana to say who its National champion is.
All pretenders to the throne of National Men’s Champion will have to face Shemar Britton, who has been dominant in winning several titles in domestic competitions for the last 2 years
They will also have to face remerging defending champion Nigel Bryan who won the last Men’s tourney, Joel Alleyne, Edinho Lewis, Elsihaba Johnson, Kyle Edghill, Orin Hickerson, Stefan Corlette and the ageless Colin France to see who is Guyana National men’s champion. This tournament, the GTTA feels, would truly provide some exciting table tennis.
On the distaff side, defending women’s champion Trenace Lowe is currently in Guyana preparing for the games as well as defending Junior champion and Junior Olympian Chelsea Edghill who is currently playing on the U.S. intercollegiate circuit.
The improving Natalie Cummings will provide some test for these combatants – former Caribbean junior champion Jody Blake, Delcia Cummings, Neveah Clarkston, Priscilla Greaves Selenas Jackman who all will provide competitive table tennis.
The other categories on show include B Class Open Singles, 21 and Under Male Singles, 21 and Under Female Singles, C Class Open Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles
