‘Reasonable bail’ for stealing cheese, milk

TWO Bourda Market vendors yesterday made an appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and were granted $75,000 bail each for allegedly breaking into a city supermarket and carting off more than $2.2M in goods.Vickram Nauth, 42, of Sandy Babb Street, Kitty and Wazim Bacchus, 35, of Golden Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge which detailed that between December 26 and 27, 2015, they broke into the building of Guyana Green Grocer and Supermarket and stole 40 boxes of cheese, 40 sacks of milk, and other articles to the value of $ 2.2M, property of Mohammed Jafar.

Bacchus’s lawyer, Mr. Adrian Thompson, made application for reasonable bail for his client, pointing out that the police had no compelling evidence and that Bacchus’s push cart might have been seen by the store surveillance footage, but not his client.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones made no objection to bail, but disclosed that none of the stolen articles had been recovered. The Chief Magistrate granted the duo bail and adjourned the matter until January 20 before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
