Christopher Lee remanded on chopping charge

A MINER was yesterday remanded to prison on a charge of unlawful wounding. He allegedly chopped off the hand of a man during a dispute.Christopher Lee, 57, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleges that, on December 27, at Yarrowkabra, Linden Highway, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Devon Evans with intent to maim, disfigure or cause him grievous bodily harm
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones informed the court that the defendant and the victim had a disagreement when Lee severed the hand of the victim. He also revealed that Evans was still in the hospital receiving medical attention.
However, according to the miner, he was attacked by a group of men who were armed with cutlasses, when one of the men chopped him on his leg, and it was one of the same men who accidentally chopped his partner when he ducked to escape further harm.
Jones successfully objected to bail for the prisoner, citing the seriousness of the offence and the fact that the victim was still hospitalised.
Lee was remanded to prison until January 15, when he will make an appearance at the Providence Magistrate’s Court, as ordered by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
