A GROUP of under-10 boys from the North Ruimveldt Squatting Area yesterday made their way into a relative’s home at North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, where a six-year-old lit a mattress and set the house on fire.

Two adults and a 16-year-old occupied the home, but the adults were at work while the 16-year-old was at a relative’s home, watching television, when disaster struck; and so it remains unclear how access was gained into the burnt home.

An older relative said he was sleeping when one of his nephews woke him up to inform him that a young nephew had lit the house on fire.

It was understood that, once inside the house, the children began playing, and one of them reportedly lit a mattress in one of the rooms. All the children fled the house after the fire started, and no one was injured.

Nothing escaped the ravages of that fire. Contacted, the Guyana Fire Service responded promptly with three tenders, but it was too late to save the wooden structure which was built 20 years ago.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
